| Cole Bowman has that kind of job. And he is exceptionally good at doing it. Home town fans love him. Opposing teams’ fans love to hate him. He's that good. To keep his job, Cole lives on the edge. Does things he knows he shouldn’t.
The lifestyle of a pro hockey player is tough and often appears glamorous. But, when the game is over and the skates come off, it’s time to leave the arena and the emotionally-charged game and spectators behind. Sometimes it’s hard to find a balance. Especially if your role is that of the team’s fighter--the Enforcer. YOU'LL NEVER VIEW HOCKEY THE SAME WAY AGAIN. |
"This book may be fiction but the story is amazing...the hockey jargon is perfect and the author’s knowledge of the sport is both impressive and appreciated by this reviewer. You don’t have to be a big hockey fan to appreciate this book. You don’t even have to be a sports fan--you just have to want to read a compelling story that takes you on a journey..."
"Valerie Wood's book gives hockey nuts like me an inside view of how hockey players relate to each other and to their lives away from the rink...her on-ice descriptions are so clear that you feel like you are there."

"One of the questions I am asked occasionally is 'What
would a woman know about writing a book about hockey--much less about
a fighter?' The marvelous thing about sports is that you can be consumed by it, whether you are male or female. As a long-time sports fan, I jumped at the chance to cover the
minor leagues for about 4 1/2 years for Hockey Ink!, a monthly
publication which nobly attempted to cover all levels of minor league
pro hockey. I took photos, I watched. Asked questions.
Did interviews. Met players like Denny Lambert, Craig Berube, Jason Marshall, Keith Jones. Wrote a variety of hockey articles, interviews and columns. Observed. Spent 2 years exclusively
covering the Baltimore Bandits. Covered the Richmond Renegades in their 1995 Riley Cup Championship season.
I am an avid reader. ENFORCER is the book I wrote because I could
find nothing contemporary in fiction to read that delved into the mindset
and challenges of the fighter - the Enforcer - and this particularly fascinates me. When my old pal Link Gaetz read
the galleys of ENFORCER, he told me how much he enjoyed the book.
I was pleased by his generous offer to write a foreword. Link asked,
'So...is this Cole Bowman character based on me?' I told him that it is a work of fiction, and any resemblance to persons, whether living
or not is...ummmm...of course...purely coincidental..."
